Here at SunKiss we are passionate about sustainability but also about protecting our precious skin from the harsh rays of the sun. I’m writing this from the desert climate of Dubai in the UAE but even in less sunny spots it is important to apply a broad-spectrum SPF every day.
We thought it would be a good idea to share some tips on applying sun screen but also the spots that are so often neglected. We all know the drill, don’t venture outside without it but have you been leaving areas of your skin vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays?
We have put together 8 commonly neglected places where we are all guilty of forgetting to apply sunscreen…
Sun & Kisses x
It’s not just guys who are thinning on top who need to apply sunscreen, be safe in the knowledge that that your scalp is protected with sunscreen along the hairline and parting, even if your wide-brimmed hats and baseball caps set sail on a strong summer’s breeze.
We understand that people might be hesitant to apply a greasy sunscreen in their hair, so here at SunKiss we are creating a new mineral SPF spray that will penetrate through the hair without leaving an oily residue. Watch this space!
Sun protection for the lips is extremely important because once sun damage has occurred, this area has an increased risk of developing into an aggressive form of squamous cell carcinoma. Happy to say that SunKiss will be launching an SPF Lip Balm in the coming months but in the meantime when applying SunKiss on your face don’t forget to wipe a little across this delicate area before popping on your lipstick!
3) Tops of the ears
We are all guilty of forgetting the tops of our ears, even if you have long hair you will probably tuck it behind your ears or tie it up during the day. When you’re putting sunscreen on your face, go a little further and give some attention to your ears, too. Like the lips, the ears can be prime targets for aggressive squamous cell carcinoma.
4) The sides of the face
It’s easy to forget to cover the entire face including the sides especially as you don’t want to get sun screen in your hairline. You coat your nose, chin and forehead with UV protection, your entire face is at risk from sun damage, so a thorough application is a must.
5) The backs of the knees
The most common place for melanoma is the back of the legs, it’s so easy to apply it at the front and forget the back – apply to the entire leg!
Tip - Envisage the width of a ping-pong ball of SunKiss, this should be enough to cover your whole body generously as a little goes a long way.
We all love the ease of wearing flip flops hanging out in the sun but this is a surprisingly common place for skin cancer to develop, cover the whole foot (including the sole), each toe, and under the nails – malignant melanoma has been diagnosed on the soles of the feet, as well as under toenails – beware!
Like the backs of the knees, the underarm area and its adjacent skin tucked along the chest is often left exposed. You need to carefully reapply SunKiss SPF around your bathing suit, or tank top straps because they can move and leave skin unprotected.
Hands are always on display and are one of the first places to give away the tell-tale signs of aging, they are also the hardest place to rejuvenate the skin, and UV exposure is typically to blame. At SunKiss we suggest that whatever you’re doing to prevent aging on your face – and sunscreen is a part of that – do the same thing for your hands.
Regular hand washing and sanitizing especially in this difficult time of COVID 19 will remove the product’s protective qualities leaving your hands exposed to sun damage and even melanoma, or squamous cell carcinoma.
Always cover the skin on the palms and backs of your hands with mineral sunscreen, and remember to reapply it throughout the day after sanitizing.
Tip - At SunKiss Lifestyle we suggest covering your body with our SPF from head to toe when you jump out of your refreshing morning shower. Don’t play a guessing game, treat it like you’re pampering your body with an all over moisture fix then you are safe in the knowledge that you’re covered.
SunKiss Unscented SPF is made with nourishing shea butter that is safe for all skin types. Shea butter is moisturizing but it won't make your skin oily, it is also anti-inflammatory, full of antioxidants, antibacterial, and its antifungal! What’s not to love?
