HOW TO APPLY SUNSCREEN

Sunscreen plays a vital role in your skincare regimen, serving as a shield against the sun's harmful effects such as sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging. It's a crucial element of sun protection, undergoing rigorous testing to ensure its effectiveness. Our comprehensive guide offers insights into choosing the right sunscreen for your skin type and how to apply it correctly.

FAQs on Sunscreen Application

When should SPF be worn?  Ideally, sunscreen should be worn at all times, especially when outdoors, regardless of whether it's a sunny or overcast day.

Are all sunscreens the same? What about SPF factors and UVA/UVB protection?   SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates the sunscreen's efficacy in blocking UVB rays. An SPF 30 blocks roughly 97% of UVB rays, with higher SPFs providing slightly more protection. However, the SPF number doesn't determine how frequently sunscreen should be reapplied.

UVA rays, often dubbed "aging rays," can accelerate skin aging, leading to wrinkles and age spots. They penetrate through glass windows.

UVB rays, known as "burning rays," are the primary cause of sunburn and can't pass through window glass.

Opt for broad-spectrum sunscreen, which offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. The choice between sunscreen types boils down to personal preference, but consistency in usage is key.

What SPF is recommended for daily wear?   The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a minimum SPF of 30 or higher for daily use.

How much sunscreen should be applied? Apply sunscreen liberally, ensuring all exposed areas are adequately covered. For most adults, about 1 ounce (or a shot glass full) is needed to cover the entire body.

What's the correct method for applying and reapplying sunscreen? Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors to allow it to absorb into the skin. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.

Ensure sunscreen is applied onto dry skin and thoroughly rubbed in. Using a mirror can help avoid missing any spots, or enlist someone's help for hard-to-reach areas.
